GroenGetrou is us: Hendrik and Tindie White, our five children, a good team beside us, and a farming life near Boshof, in the Free State.

It began in a small vegetable garden, looking for food we could give our children without wondering what was in it. One thing led to another, as it does, and the garden slowly became a way of life.

Our hens spend their days out on the veld, free to scratch and forage across the grass. Their eggs are our Weiveld Eiers™️. The chickens we raise for the table grow slowly, out in the open, the way they were made to. This is our Weiveld Hoender™️. We do not hold it up as the only right way. We are still learning, season by season, and that is much of the joy of it.

We may not be in the city’s rat race, but we do have chicken runs. The work here is never quite finished, though we would take wind and sun over traffic any day. We try to slow down enough to gratefully notice the small wonders, because family farming holds mysteries and marvels enough for a lifetime.

There is much to learn from holistic management, regenerative agriculture and permaculture, and we have borrowed gladly from all of them. Still, we do not farm by any one system. Mostly we follow the soft voice in our hearts.

GroenGetrou means staying faithful: to the land, to the animals in our care, and to the families who trust us to feed theirs as honestly as we feed our own.
